Type Locality and Naming
The Sandong Formation was named by the No 705 Geological Team of Guangdong in 1988. Type locality is in the Shawan section of the Renhua County, Guangdong (113º31', 25º07').
Lithology and Thickness
The Sandong Formation is composed of a group of brownish red volcanic rocks and volcanic sedimentary clastic rocks, indicated by rhyolitic tuff, andesite and basalt. It is about 124 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
This formation unconformably overlies the Qiaoyuan Fm or the older strata.
Upper contact
Conformably underlies the Maziqiao Fm.
Regional extent
It is distributed in the Shaoguan area of Guangdong.
